An excerpt from Brian’s book, A Healing Process
Many people in our culture in our society have been looking “for a way”. They have been nurturing almost as if it were a shift in consciousness as they search for alternatives to the ever threatening political and environment dilemmas that our civilisation has created. For me I have come to understand that our society creates our problems for us and then attempts to give us solutions and make us pay for both. One of the major reasons for developing the solution or an attempt to the solution is the development of the Vital Balance process. It is that process that I hope to demonstrate in this book, allowing the reader to think through the mind of the processes involved in this book and with that understanding have a different outlook to see through what is contained therein, that the Vital Balance process is in itself a healing process.
Who am I? What do I want? I have asked myself that question many many times. I have looked in the mirror many many times looking for things to love. I wasn’t always like that. I was born to struggling parents, a mother who virtually came from the other side of the tracks with virtually no formal education. The only education that she achieved in a boarding school in her early years as she had lost her father and her mother seemed to be continuously ill. The mother I remember died when I was about 5 years old.
It was the most memorable thing that I can remember in my life. I can remember that my grandmother on my mother’s side had a large cancerous lump on the right-hand side of her neck, which wasn’t there when we were in the queue to walk past the open coffin to pay our respects. That was the first and only wake that I ever went to, and my father told me to bend over the coffin and kiss my grandmother goodbye and I can remember looking at her still and frozen and ashen with no life and I refused and my father pushed my face onto my grandmother’s forehead because people were waiting. I carried that devastation for many many years of my life until my father’s death and at that time I forgave him for what he did.
The second most important memory that I can remember, literally as if it were today, was receiving a 3-wheel bike, my first tricycle, when I was 3. I was on the verandah of our home near the railway tracks at Buranda in Brisbane. There was a storm that evening and the lightning lit up the verandah as I pedaled and pedaled and pedaled the length of the verandah time after time. That I remember.
My preoccupation with death at an early age was to have a profound impact upon me as I grew. The coldness of the body without life especially on the sensitivity of the lips. Why was the body lifeless? My grandmother was in the coffin and yet she wasn’t really there. Death then was not a thing that was easily understood.
Who am I? What do I want? I’m probably not sure. I do know that I want the world to be a better place, the world that I live in. My understanding now is much greater than it ever was because I have always had an inquiring mind, I’ve always wanted to know what makes things work, I’ve always wanted to know why people think the way they do and I’ve come to understand that the ‘why question’ is not easily answered. I do know because of my almost 30 years in natural therapy practice of the Vital Balance process that I have gradually put together and shared with so many people has made in their words “a profound impact upon their life”.
Vital as the name implies is complete vitality and I have come to understand for intensive research that good health is a complete state of wellbeing and not just the absence of a disease, a form of disease. I’m sure that most of you reading these pages have been at some stage where I was, not understanding disease. Disease was a thing to be shunned, not thought about, for fear that you attracted it to you. My grandmother and my mother on my father’s side told me that. My grandmother was as Irish as you could ever be and probably one of the true ‘Celts’, full of suspicion and yet a very wise, intelligent and loveable lady who also made a profound impact upon my life. Her name was Mary. People called her May, and May use to always say “wisssssht” whenever I talked about a diseased condition. And when I think about it she was probably the first person to encourage me to think positive about myself and would guide my thinking towards focusing on what it is I should do rather than fear what I didn’t want. If you grew up like I did thinking that disease with all of its strange names was like the creeping unknown, like something that was airborne that could land on you and affect you like some dreaded curse or pox it would affect you. I can remember many years later in Adelaide Australia where I first started school at the age of 6, I may have been 7 or 8 years old, when I asked two important questions of the nuns who were my teachers -
1. What is cancer? and
2. What are the dark shadows on the full moon?
In answer to the first question ‘what is cancer’, I was told not to think about it, not even to ask the question for fear that the ‘devil’ would give it to me. In answer to the second question I was told that the dark patches on the full moon were caused by clouds in our upper atmosphere that were darkening the glow of the moon. In answer to that answer I proposed a question ‘then why are the clouds always in the same pattern?’ and I was told not to ask questions like that because that’s the way God made everything.
In looking back I believe those questions and answers have provoked me most of my life to search for truth. My father was in Adelaide during the time of the Second World War. I was born in 1936 and the war with Germany started in 1939. In 1941 we were in Adelaide, just after the death of my grandmother on my mother’s side. My father was sent there to manage the South Australian Plywood Company where he had developed a formula for a very strong glue used in the manufacture of a special plywood that was needed in the building of mosquito bombers.
Coming from a background of industrial chemistry and bio-chemistry and research into foods, fats and fertilisers, after the Second World War when there was a mass of surplus of literally tonnes and tonnes of chemicals that we use in explosives, nitrates and phosphates and potash, I can see where there was a change in farming in the ‘Chinese Market Gardener’ concept to factory farming. I will make mention further on and in more depth further in the book. Those days of research proved to me that it had to be golden, crunchy, cracklier, nicer, sweeter, and tastier. They didn’t know it at the time but one of the important ingredients that was never mentioned, or ever thought about, was nutrition. The following is a list of my revelations based on those experiences:
I am a spiritual being having a human experience.
I am a mobile self-regulating, self-fixing, self-immunising being.
Yesterday is history, Tomorrow’s a mystery, Today is a gift. That’s why they call it the present.
These revelations have had a profound influence upon my thinking, and underpin the formation of the principals of Vital Balance.
Nutrition is a very very strange word and I would provoke you, the reader, to do everything in your power to understand exactly what a nutrient is, for they are the building blocks which keep your organism, the temple of the spirit, functioning correctly. Of course we must include the other elements that will be discussed in detail partly in this book and the many books to come.
On my successful radio broadcast and talking to the people in my many lectures throughout Australia, New Zealand and the US, I have never met one nutritionist or educated person in dietetics or nutrition who could adequately tell me or show me what a nutrient looked like. You see I never learnt that either. The establishment with all its research education facilities, ‘neglected’ to tell me what a nutrient looked like. Was it by design? I’m sure. Was it oversight? I don’t think so. Even today the curriculum that our universities encourage people to enter into, the many facets of healthcare, ‘health’, you see is an illusion. They’re not talking about healthcare, they’re talking about sick care. They’re talking about the involvement of various modalities like dietetics and physiotherapy, just to name a couple. They’re all about fixing a problem, in other words it should go under the name of ‘sick care’ not ‘healthcare”.
The Vital Balance process addresses healthcare and it starts at root causes and gives solutions and helps the being develop a knowing and you see wisdom comes with the application of knowledge, not just the knowledge itself. Knowledge is good but unless it’s applied it really is meaningless. Wisdom is the application of knowledge. One has knowledge another can say ‘well so what’, you know, what does it mean to you? If one has applied the knowledge then one can say ‘well this works for me, I’ve put it to the test over a period of time and shared it with others and it works for others’. With this knowledge there comes with the application, more of a knowing. Even the ancient text said ‘by their knowing they are healed. By their faith they are healed.’ Because with knowing and more of the application of knowledge and the greater hence the wisdom, the more the knowledge and hence the believability and only when you believe do you see it. Believe and you will see. It does not work the other way around.
Throughout this book and subsequent books there will be further revelations of mine which I will share with you but I propose to outline a lot of the ancient text that I have used in the Vital Balance process. I propose to put them in story form for ease of understanding, similar to the way in which they were presented in the ancient text in Chinese literature. I rely very heavily upon the wisdom of their ancient text like the Ling Shui and the Su Wen where the Emperor is talking to the Sage and asks questions and listens to the answers. I have found this way of presenting knowledge, even though it may sound a little childish to some, has a profound influence upon your being. Even in our ancient text it says ‘unless you become like the child you cannot enter the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven’ and I believe that to be so true. The story part of this book is aimed at education for those of adulthood in training their children because I believe that children need that training, it is something that is sadly missing in our world today. If the ‘establishment’ has its way there will be continued more of the same and lack of education of our children. You know as well as I do that there has been a wedge put into the family unit. People do not sit around the tea table and discuss world events. Adults do not listen to their children and how they’re performing at school or even lower education like kindergarten or preschool. Children have no time for their parents or discussion at the tea table to explain what it is they’re doing or even ask questions. Children are not spending time with the super oldies, their grandparents, who are supposed to have the wisdom of time and age to pass onto the children as was done in the past.
I can remember visiting some of the islands of Vanuatu and you put back your watch at least 200 years on some of their remote islands and the people there are like children. It’s a ‘Shangri-la’ and when I saw them doing things right, for example the women only ate fruit and vegetables and salad material at the time of their menstrual cycle. I asked them why, and they looked quizzically and said ‘well, that’s what we were told to do when we were children by our grandparents.’ “It is traditional”. The women in the remote islands do not wear ‘Meds’ or ‘pads’ during their menstrual cycle. There is no need as there is a very small amount of brown fluid because of their healthy eating, healthy lifestyle and living in harmony with their environment which is also traditional.
They have little leather sacks and whenever they’re walking through the bush in land that does not belong to them and they take a banana or a pawpaw or some fruit to eat or even a carrot or as they call it their cabbage lettuce or their island lettuce, they always put back some seeds. As they take, they put back and admittedly the land is very fertile. It is so wonderful, I can remember in administering to the past Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Walter Lini, on the Island of Pentecost, he asked me to stay and they would make available sizeable blocks of land where I could live forever in peace and harmony. And I almost did but on many hours of reflection I decided that my destiny lay with the decadence and the disease and the infirmary and the sick care of our modern society.
People are coming to understand more and more that life is an ‘illusion’. My Vital Balance process will help you to understand the truth behind the illusions, help you to motivate yourself to bring balance and harmony into your life, to allow you to be totally balanced in body and mind and spirit. And when I talk spirit in these and other pages and in future books, I’m not, not talking religion, I believe I’m talking about the real You and I, spiritual beings having a human experience and having allegiance to the One almighty God who did send his Son with the power of the Holy Spirit to show us the way. I have had patients who simply have adoration for the Son of God without full and proper adoration of the Almighty God and that’s okay, their time is not yet right. I believe though that like in politics both Federally and State, that religion suffers under the burden of dogma, don’t do it this way, do it my way, and therein there is a problem. Each religion purports to adore the same God, and yet each believes that they are right and others are wrong. I find that a difficult and a bitter pill to swallow.
I believe that another two of my greatest revelations have been to understand the meaning of ‘humility and compassion’. I came from a situation in research chemistry where I had been patted on the back by my superiors who told me how great I was and I was to be the next managing director of a flourishing company and I believed them. My ego went through the roof and I was so good, so good at what I did that when circumstances forced me to walk away from it, the establishment replaced me in 4 days.
That’s really how clever I was. My mentor, a wonderful old German Jewish Naturopathic Sage, who also introduced me to the art of acupuncture, and who had a profound influence upon my life encouraged me to embrace humility. To those who are interested it is No. 15 of the 64 hexagrams in Traditional Chinese Philosophy, and I would provoke you at some stage to embrace the Neiching and understand the philosophy of the 64 hexagrams and the nature of the trigrams that support them. It took me five years approximately to become, what I believe, anything close to becoming humble.
The next was understanding the full impact of compassion, the ability not to judge. “Judge not lest ye yourself be judged” had a profound influence upon me. I can remember having great difficulty in understanding the true meaning of the difference between sympathy and empathy. It was only then, I can remember, reading and endeavouring to understand a copy of a dissertation written by Sir Lawrence Olivier that I will put in the back of this book for all to read and cherish, which is the dissertation of Time. You see I have come to know and understand that to judge, and to verbalise the judgment, one has to be what one is saying about the other being. You cannot verbalise a negative judgment unless you yourself are that. “The man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder – a waif, a nothing, a no man. Have a purpose in life, and, having it, throws such strength of mind and muscle into your work as God has given you.” Written by Thomas Carlyle between (1795 – 1881). David A Phillips (the Harvey Diamond of Australia) wrote “Everything in life, in the universe and beyond has a purpose. Human life has its general purpose and each individual, has an individual purpose. Yet, although everyone has a purpose, very few ever come to know what it is. He/she who lives a life of purpose consistent with their need have invested their talents. However, he/she who realises their purpose but feels that it is too much to fulfil merely bury their talents: he/she who acts in accord with random desires and whims, literally throw their talents away.”
I have come to know that to have lived and died never to have known what one is good at or what purpose to follow can be classified as shameful. Should we not be motivated by the words “Seek and you shall find knock and the door is open to you”. How many of you have ever pondered these statements? How many of you have read it, but have yet to apply it? If you don’t know the answer to your own questions then wait, meditate, ponder, pray, and ask for guidance and then be patient. The answers and the realisations will come to you. I would hope that the information contained with this Vital Balance process as you read each book in the series, will inspire you and assist you to compound this knowledge and encourage you to continue to live your life on purpose. To live your life with passion. To live your life with love. Love of self, in everything you do for example –
I love the way I feel when I witness a sunrise. I love the way I feel when I smell the flowers in the early morning. I love the way I feel when I listen to the birds beginning their day and whistling and twittering to each other, busy, busy, busy.
I have often wondered whether a bird makes up its mind to fly from this particular branch to a branch over yonder? Or does it just simply take off and fly and land where its wings take it, then if it doesn’t like that branch it will take off and fly again to wherever its wings take it?
We can’t fly, not literally anyway, but we can move. Maybe if we are living our life on purpose then whatever we don’t like about our environment, about ourselves, about the way we live, about the way we feel, then maybe we can develop the courage to change it.
